NBRI-EIACP-PROGRAMME CENTRE OF MoEF&CC

Theme: Plants & Pollution

https://nbrienvis.nic.in

The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) came into existence as a planned programme in 1983 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India. ENVIS has been a comprehensive network of environmental information centres located across the country for environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to different users including decision-makers, researchers, academicians, policy planners, research scientists and the general public, etc. The network was expanded gradually with the involvement of thematic subject areas. The Centres are located in autonomous bodies under the Ministry and in State Government Departments/ Organisations; and notable Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and institutions of excellence in higher education and research. The Environmental Information System (ENVIS Centre) at CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute started functioning as a node on the theme “Plants as Indicators of Pollution” in January 2003. It became a full-fledged ENVIS Centre in January 2005 and the thematic area given to the centre is “Plants and Pollution”

The ENVIS Scheme which was previously under the umbrella scheme ‘Decision Support System for Environmental Awareness, Policy, Planning and Outcome Evaluation’ of MoEF&CC has been subsumed within the revamped scheme of Environment Education, Awareness, Research and Skill Development (EERASD) in June 2022 by MoEF&CC. The revamped scheme has three components and one of the components is Environmental Information, Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP). To reinforce India’s efforts towards effective environmental management, the EIACP has been launched by MoEF&CC. Awareness, skilling and research and development in the green sectors (environment and forestry) form some of the major prerequisites for effective environmental management in India.

The EIACP uses a network of decentralized frameworks endowed with the agenda of integrating country-wide efforts toward environmental conservation and management. It encompasses the best functional aspects of the erstwhile ENVIS Scheme and serves as a one-stop platform for the dissemination of environmental information, informed policy formulation on various facets of the environment, and facilitation of alternate livelihoods through green skilling.

The aims and objectives of the NBRI-EIACP Programme Centre of MoEF&CC running at CSIR-NBRI are as under:

  1. To conduct skilling courses considering future scope, requirements and prospects on i) Pollution Monitoring: Soil Pollution and
ii) Greenbelt Development for Industries to foster gainful and self-employment of youth

  2. To be involved in the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) being implemented by MoEF&CC.

  3. To facilitate scientific knowledge on the theme “Plants and Pollution” through a dedicated website (https://nbrienvis.nic.in) and knowledge products (viz., ISSN accession quarterly newsletters, case studies, bibliography, policy papers and other ICT resource materials).

  4. To develop national and international collaboration for knowledge exchange on the theme and facilitate the attainment of the SDGs.

PLANTS FOR AIR POLLUTION ATTENUATION

The “Green Planner” is a database to provide information on different plants for mitigating air pollution. These plants can be planted on roadside, road-dividers, in greenbelts, and in indoor premises. The plantation of such locally suitable and pollution mitigant plants will help to ameliorate the deleterious effects of different air pollutants from industrial emissions, vehicular exhausts, and indoor premises. The plant list in the Green Planner provides the botanical and common names of pollution-tolerant and mitigant plants, their distribution in India and suitable planting sites along with economic and ecological benefits and other relevant information. This App is developed by NBRI-EIACP (erstwhile ENVIS-NBRI) Programme Centre at CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow-India.
